Ghost Town: Watrous, New Mexico

These photos weree taken at the ghost town of Watrous, New Mexico by Dave and Sharon.

Watrous was originally known as La Junta de Los Rios Mora y Sapello, or La Junta. In 1846 came Samuel B. Watrous who donated land to the railroad in 1879. The railroad changed the name of the town to Watrous.  Seven years later both father and son were dead.  Newspaper accounts label the death as suicides, but according to later reports, the son was heir to the father's estate and the son's stepmother may have hired the an accomplice who actually killed them.  The newspaper claimed that Samuel B. Watrous Sr., had committed suicide thy shooting himself in the head twice.  The question does surface as to how someone can shoot themselves in the head . . . twice!

The photos show the old abandoned two story school house, an old home on a side street, a court yard with an old fashion well and the old Masonic Temple.
