Tumco was named for The Union Mining Company that operated the mine at the turn of the century. Some four or five hundred people lived and worked in the mines. Two grave yards, one for the Protestants and one for the Catholics are found here. The ruins of many of the homes can still be seen here, along with many mine shafts that poke into the mountain. During the summer months, this ghost town must be the home of many rattlesnakes so caution should be used. This is a very remote location, but can be accessed by 2W drive vehicles. The hike in is about half a mile.
