Palo Duro Canyon, Texas

Hello Friends,

These photographs were taken at Palo Duro Canyon, about 34 miles south of Amarillo, Texas. Palo Duro Canyon is being called, "The Grand Canyon of Texas" as it is the deepest canyon in the state. We visited this interesting place and found that it paled in comparison to places we had visited in Utah, Nevada or Arizona. However, it was red rock country and it was the place where troops from Fort Reno and Fort Sill engaged Indians in the late 1870s and rounded up 1,400 Indian horses, thereby forcing the Indians back to Reservations. The shame of this story is that they ended up destroying over 1,000 Indian horses.  The canyon is more suited for horse back tours to discover the beauty than just driving around it on paved roads. Also, but not least, the last photo is our mascot captured in the turned in mirror so Sharon could take some 35mm photos.  Interesting event occurred as she photographed one butte.  After snapping the photo recorded on frame 16 of a 24 frame roll, her Pentax PZ-20 started to rewind itself back to the start. The Pentax PZ-20 is not a throw-away type of camera, but one she uses in her professional work. Interesting that somebody did not want more photos taken!
