Our travels took us back to Old Mesilla, the best known and most visited historic community in southern New Mexico. Last year we had only one day to see this beautiful little community, but this year we are taking four days to experience the favor of this Mexican-American community. We started off with a lunch in the courtyard amid blooming flowers at the haunted Double Eagle Resturant located on the Plaza. (Top right photo) Lunch was excellent and the atmosphere was top notch. We walked around the plaza and visited the individual shops. We found that the winter months are great as the merchants are happy to see customers that they discount their products. The church was open and we took a few minutes to enjoy the solitude of this old church. We saw a sign that told those attending services to please shut off their cellphones. It is a shame that signs has to be put up for those who are so thoughtless as to leave their cellphones on during church services. We live in an age when common sense is often in short supply.
Our time here was divided between browsing the shops and driving around this small community as we enjoyed the diversity of this town. We missed the plaza vendors because the wind had picked up and by the time we stop browsing the shops, the vendors had packed their ware away and were departing. Strong winds mixed with dust and sand can be unpleasant. We celebrated my birthday by having dinner at "Way Out West" where we listened to guitar music and enjoyed southwest cuisine.
