The old 1887 ghost town of Congress named for the Congress Mine is no longer on public property, but resides under "Off Limits" signs by a mining company that apparently bought up the site. However, the Old Congress Pioneer Cemetery is still open to the public. Congress is located about fifteen miles west of Wickenburg on the Ghost Town Road.
Locating the old cemetery is not hard, but the road was most intereting. Imagine driving a Honda over a sandy road that dips into the stream beds and over small rises. This may not seem interesting, but if it should rain, the sandy road becomes impassable. As we drove on this road, we were beginning to wonder if we would find the cemetery as we weaved around cactus and rocky outcroppings. The road went from sandy to rocky and our Honda sits low to the ground so we were just waiting for the loud thump from one of the protruding rocks we drove over.
The cemetery seemed to have many children graves, many that were not marked except for a pile of rocks in the shape of a small grave. Most graves had no marker as the wooden sign had long ago decayed away. It was a peaceful and quiet place suggesting the spirits are at rest.
